Often times I’m asked, how do I incorporate animals into my practice? When this arises, I like to reflect on the moments when I get home and get to be with my cat. All the worries of the day fade away and I am able to disconnect from the day to day hassle that is life while I just sit back and relax with my best friend.
Now Imagine being able to have a companion and confidant that will never judge you or criticize a life choice or bad judgement? That is what Pet Therapy entails. Having a supplemental ally through processing whatever hardships or issues you may be experiencing or have experienced. <!–more–>
Who benefits from Pet Therapy?
Lets face it, life is just better with cats! (all jokes aside), Studies have shown animal assisted therapy (Pet Therapy) aides in the treatment of:
- Social function
- Emotional function
- Cognitive function
- Life transitions
- Anger management
- Chronic disease
The data reflects that we tend to have positive associations when we see or interact with an animal and our brain releases oxytocin which in turn makes us feel happier and thus more relaxed. It also helps with decreasing ones feeling of wanting to engage in isolation and loneliness. Pet Therapy has been traditionally practiced in hospital settings, most specifically on Intensive Care Units, Hospice, Palliative and Oncology units. Having to deal with the circumstances of being on these units, these four legged friends can come and help ease the tension for the client and their families.
It can be inferred that the presence of an animal (in our case a Cat) can help the client seeking therapy ease more into their therapeutic work. We are very proud to announce that we are the only Cat Café that will offer actual Pet Therapy (Animal assisted therapy) with a licensed Mental Health Counselor & a certified cat used in each therapy session. We are excited and hopeful to become the pioneers of bringing therapy and cats together to help out our communities need in affordable therapy and animal assistance services.
